The X House is a residential prototype designed for the Bom Sucesso tourism housing development in Óbidos, Portugal. The scheme was conceptualized as a dwelling model to be replicated six times along a street in the Zone 3 of the Bom Sucesso development.
The name of the project originates from its roof plan in the shape of a “X”. In fact, its roof is designed as a green roof that becomes the fifth facade of the building. While it extends beyond the bounding walls of the house, it also creates shaded transitional areas between the exterior and interior.
The exterior of the houses is divided into three different spaces on each lot. To the southeast one can access the residences as well as the parking. To the west, one can unwind in the privacy of a private terrace that is connected to the living room. And finally, to the northeast, one can find the window openings of the bedrooms directed towards the sunrise each morning.
The Interior of the vacation residences pivots around a central core, from which the service and served zones are connected and distributed to create relationships with one of the three exterior spaces. For instance, the bedrooms are aligned at 45º pointing to the east not merely to allow the inhabitants to witness in the morning the sensational natural lighting in Portugal, but to also connect each room to its distinctive roofed courtyard facing south, and thus receiving constant sunlight throughout the day.
On the other hand, the service area is placed against the street on the southwest side of the central core. However, there are no windows looking directly into the road. The privacy within the houses is kept by negating a connection with the public realm of the Bom Sucesso neighbourhood.
Overall, the design intent is to enliven the interior inhabitation experience of each of the six houses while establishing a coherent rapport between the rooms and their corresponding exterior spaces.
