I learnt the craft techniques of palm leaf folding, a natural plant from the south region of Portugal, where I design and built two masks for Solstice celebrations. I travelled to South of Portugal in Algarve to participate in a creative design residency where I worked together with the palm leaf craftsmen, Sr. Custódio. I learnt where to catch the palm leafs in the region, how to prepare the material before its use, techniques of folding and how to sew the pieces. This project was inspired in the natural phenomenon of Solstice and the associated paganism cults and rituals, as the Roman God ‘Sol Invictus’. The Winter Solstice mask represents the victory of lights against darkness. I built the mask using two folding techniques. The surface on top, creates a gradient effect with purple in the center and the natural yellow around.
