When we design our homes, we often only think about the essential spaces we need, like the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, living room, and garden, but it's easy to forget to include the room we need most of all: a relaxation room.

Ideally, we want our homes to feel relaxing all around, but it can be beneficial to create extra spaces, nooks, and retreats within the home that allow us to truly escape from the everyday stresses of life and work.

Whether its a comfy chair placed next to a light-filled window, or an enchanted floral area you'll never want to leave, we hope you can find some inspiration for those times when you just need the perfect place to rest your legs, reach for that glass of wine, and loosen up…

Furniture and room arrangement

Of course the first step to having a relaxation area in your home is to pick the right furniture and to arrange it properly. The way you place your furniture in your home will greatly impact the overall feel of your room.

Here, we have a nice setup where the furniture is centred around a coffee table. This openness allows a free flow of air and energy that's sure to relax anyone who enters this space. The couch looks soft and plump, and the shag rug adds extra soft texture, inviting you to kick off your shoes and curl up to enjoy some much needed down time.

Implement a day bed

Look around your home and you could discover that you have a large window just begging for a day bed to be custom installed before it. You can even cosy it up with extra comfortable cushions and a throw rug for cooler mornings and afternoons.

The lighting

In order to achieve a fully relaxing space, replace harsh florescent lights with calming, natural, or candle lights. Placing different sources of light will allow you to control the light intensity in each area.

For the bedroom, wall mounted lights are especially practical, as they can be oriented to highlight the respective areas and provide great indirect lighting, not like bedside lamps, which can be rather inflexible.

Find an enchanted spot

More often than not, creating the perfect relaxation spot doesn’t come from big renovations or costly furniture. You simply need to keep your eyes peeled for a good spot in or around your home with the right feel to it.

If you have a big garden, take some plants from outside, bring them in, and surround a comfy love seat with them. This will give you that nestled-in-nature feel and will take the weight off of your shoulders in no time!

Create a reading nook

The same relaxation principle works inside, as well. All you need is a tiny alcove that gets a bit of lovely light peeking through a window, then add one beautiful and comfortable chair, maybe a side table, and voila! Instant cosy reading nook.

Ornamentation is also kept to a minimum here, freeing you from distractions as you delve deeper into your favourite novel.

Curl up by the fire

Long ago, the fireplace was at the centre of the relaxation hub. These days, television has overruled the fireplace, but let's not let that get in the way of our relaxation zone.

Here, the two live side by side, offering a warm bank for those cold winter nights, while also providing some entertainment for those days when you just want to zone out.

Make the most out of your view

Some cosy chairs, a sofa, and an ottoman for those fatigued legs are all you need when the view is as inviting as this. Don't forget a nice throw rug for an extra dose of warmth and comfort underfoot, and that centre table is the perfect resting place for your afternoon cuppa joe.
