Merida is often considered the cultural capital of Yucatan and one of the most prominent cities of Mexico. Architecturally speaking, its vibrantly colourful cityscape offers a bouquet of landmarks, each strikingly different from each other. Not too far away from Merida stands the ancient structure of Chichen Itza. Remains of Mayan civilization are replete closer to the city as well. Downtown Merida still exhibits a large number of Spanish structures.  The city centre is occupied by a collection of buildings representing colonial to contemporary designs.

In this backdrop, young architects like that of Taller Estilo Arquitectura are creating new visual essays in the form of residential and commercial buildings. The young team at Taller Estilo Arquitectura has already earned a name for its distinctive style. Their designs are youthful, vibrant, true to the traditions of Mexico yet modern through ans through. Casa GL53 – one of their latest creations that we are about to see – embodies all of that and more.

Overview

The original building, dating back to 1920s, was one of the stellar creations of a bygone era. Any additions and renovation therefore needed to conform to the style already established by the existing structure. This was to become a family home. The owners planned to use it in short intervals during holiday season. The project included expanding on the outdoor space and building a separate terrace.

Swimming pool

Undoubtedly, the reasonably sized swimming pool is the most prominent feature of this area. A narrow path stylised with dry laid pavers and gravel connects two parts of the premises. It leads up to the private quarter of the building from a public entertainment area.

An array of potted plants is lined up against the mortared wall. The façade wears an azure blue shade perhaps as an ode to the vast sky above and the blue water of the swimming pool below. Use of terracotta tiles on roof creates a welcome contrast between burnt sienna and calm blue.

Outdoor dining area

The outdoor party area consists of a dining space and small barbecue zone. It is tastefully decorated with a rattan dining set. The pendant lighting fixtures brighten up the space both with their decorative presence and artificial light.

Seating arrangements are made under the bare sky. Simple cushions deck up an ‘L’ shaped stone platform. The LED lighting underneath brings glamorous touches. Various palm species, planted in ground and in pots, strive to create a serene and beautiful space appropriate for relaxation and calm contemplation.

Small garden and staircase

Native plants and flowers thrive in the shade. A small space just under the stairs is specified for them. The gravel bed surrounds this tiny sanctuary from all sides. Stylish cast iron staircase gives access to the first floor level.

With its blue and white façade and green trees in the background, the decorative staircase acts as a piece of sculpture.

Entertainment on terrace

Elaborate arrangements of entertainment are seen on the first floor terrace as well. The wide open area is decorated with a number of potted plants. Being slightly secluded, this place feels more comfortable for a heart to heart chat.

Cushioned concrete platforms ensure that one can sit here for hours without feeling any kind of fatigue; enjoy the company of the other members of the family and close friends long into the evening; and at the end of the day cherish the star studded sky above. Wall mounted lighting fixtures keep the place bright and lively.

Bathroom

The bathroom is small but decorated in style. Use of engineered wood, stone and minimal décor gives it a stylish feel and contemporary look. The large mirror mounted on the wall above the simple but chic vanity unit helps in creating a roomy feel as well. The shower area is partitioned off with a transparent panel. Like the courtyard outside the focus seems to be on removing non-essentials but creating a homey environment nonetheless.
