When it comes to home renovation projects, choosing a new kitchen can be one of the most fun. However, it can also be very stressful, expensive and time-consuming.

How do you know which countertops are perfect for your needs? Or which kitchen layout to go with? Or what flooring surfaces are perfect for a space where we cook and socialise?

By reading these tips and seeing the top-notch results of 4D Studio. 1. Find the correct location

Have a good look at your property’s floor plan – it might just be possible to have your dream kitchen without tearing down a wall or extending your home’s footprint. Consider the possibility of relocating your kitchen to another part of the house.

Always get the room designs drawn up by a professional before starting work – it might turn out that something as simple as moving a doorway can result in a kitchen that’s stylish and practical.

2. Decide on the ideal layout

Open-plan kitchens might be trendy, but are they suitable for your home and lifestyle? Remember that while open kitchens enhance a social atmosphere, there are also a few disadvantages to consider.

Are you a messy cook? Are you comfortable with your guests watching you prepare meals? What about cooking scents and –noise wafting from the kitchen to the living / dining area?

3. Is your layout practical?

Check that your proposed kitchen layout is 100% practical. Run through how it would work when preparing some of your favourite meals.

For instance, while an island is ideal for guests and family to socialise, is there enough space for one? Remember that there should be about 110 – 120cm of clear space between the edges of worktops and your island unit.

And in the perfect kitchen layout, your dishwasher should be next to the sink (and tableware close to the dining area, etc. etc.).

4. Consider worktops and appliances

Appliances are the big investment when it comes to a kitchen, which is why you need to double check what you’re considering buying.

After deciding on your budget, whittle down the options in terms of your practical requirements, style, colour, and finish. Marble, for instance, is a stunning choice, but porous – which is why it’s not great for a busy area prone to spills and stains.

5. Choosing the right style and décor

While your kitchen floor must be practical, keep in mind that it also forms part of the room’s decorative element. Timber, for example, ensures a natural look that’s soft and warm underfoot – and engineered boards are quite practical.

Ensure further colour for the kitchen with the walls or backsplash, and texture and pattern with seating and textiles. For extra interest, consider eye-catching accessories such as an oversized wall clock.
