Though the equinox might mark the official first day of spring, for many it is Easter Sunday that really marks the beginning of the season. There is a certain freshness and rejuvenation associated with this unique holiday, and celebrating it can be an ideal occasion to gather with friends. As spring is fast approaching, it’s time to begin planning the specifics of your festivities.

While some symbols like rabbits, eggs, pastels and white tones might be traditionally linked to this holiday, it’s not always obvious how to incorporate them into a decorative scheme. Whether you’re looking to plan your first-ever Easter gathering, or you are a seasoned veteran just looking to do something new, you’ve come to the right place. Today we are going to cover the ins and outs of Easter themed décor.

Incorporate vibrant colours with textiles

A quick and easy way to introduce the spirit of Easter to your home is to add pops of colour into your existing design scheme. The easiest way to do this is to opt for textiles in these tones. Textiles can be easily swapped out for others as the seasons change, so it’s a bit simpler and more cost effective than buying new furniture. The colour tones are a bit broader than simple pastel floral prints as well. For instance, you could certainly add a lively yellow pillow like this one to the look and have it qualify as spring-like in appearance. Just try to steer away from sober, earthy hues as these colours have more sombre, wintry and autumnal associations.

Use floral and pastel prints

It's important to decide the decorative scheme that’s best for capturing the essence of Easter and springtime. Largely because floral prints are very in this year, we recommend going ultra-feminine with your Easter décor. Break out your floral draperies, cushions, and textiles. With just a few of these items you can certainly make a strong decorative statement.

If you’re looking to make a big change and feel particularly inspired by springtime style, you might even want to purchase some floral print furniture like this sofa by Portuguese designers, Pedroso & Osório. While you may not be looking to go all-out floral in your living room, floral porch and patio furniture is fabulous this time of year. Just imagine some lovely floral chairs against a backdrop of vibrant green spring foliage. Beautiful!

Don’t forget bunnies!

Since floral prints are something you can keep around long after Easter is over, they make for a nice general backdrop to your spring themed gathering. To really make the look specific to Easter, you’ll want to add a few decorations that really reference the holiday.

When you stop and think for a moment about the most notable Easter icons, one that’s bound to come to mind is the Easter bunny. We don’t recommend getting some real rabbits for the event – unless you plan on caring for them long term, of course! Luckily, there are lots of other cute bunny accessories available depending on the vibe you’re looking for. If you have children in tow, we love the idea of going with some rabbit décor inspired by children’s illustrations like this sweet hanging mobile. For a more adult look, there are plenty of lifelike and avant garde rabbits out there.

Decorate with eggs

Another common secular Easter symbol is the Easter egg! Organising your event around an Easter egg hunt is sure to help create fun-filled Easter memories for your little ones. Similarly, there are lots of ways to create beautiful Easter baskets filled with eggs, chocolates, grasses, and ribbons.

If you’d like to go DIY, you and your children might enjoy decorating Easter eggs to put around the house as well. For a more sophisticated option, there are plenty of faux eggs and chicken decorations to incorporate into the look.

If you’re someone who hates having to take down the festive decorations, this could be a good time to invest in some chicken themed deco like these sketches, mugs, and hand towels. Combine them with some coloured eggs for Easter time, and then keep the chicken pieces up as long as you like!

Add some fresh Easter flowers

Nothing says spring like the scent of fresh flowers in the air. Bring this sensation to your house by adding lots of fresh flowers to the space where you’ll be holding your Easter gathering and beyond. Lilies are perhaps the most iconic Easter flower. They bring a lovely perfume to the room, and they certainly look exquisite, too.

Traditionally, Easter flowers are white and sometimes yellow. Hues of pink and purple will go nicely in your Easter bouquet as well. Just try to stick to pastel tones to commemorate the youthful softness of early spring. House your flowers in glass vases, white ceramic, or ones in French provincial style.

To add brightness: don’t forget the white!

Of course, all of these design details ought to be added to a backdrop of pure white. White is a symbol of purity and rebirth. It is the trademark colour of Easter following the solemn purples of the Lenten season. Therefore, white colours are actually quite vibrant in their own right within this context. It is an unmistakable symbol of this lighter spirited day of celebration.

Admittedly, it can be a bit difficult to work white into an existing interior in such a way that it has this brilliant visual impact. If you’re wondering where exactly to add white to get this striking effect, we recommend using it in your table settings. By using a white tablecloth, dishware, napkins, and candles, the table will be well on its way to Easter splendour. If you’d like to take it to the next level, add some white Easter lilies as a centrepiece.
