Most of us host overnight guests from time to time – family from out of town, colleagues spending the night, etc. And while a friendly attitude is vital, a beautifully designed spare bedroom also goes a long way in making your guests feel welcome.

After all, your home will be their home for however long they stay with you; thus, why not put a little effort into making up that spare bedroom?

Of course if you don’t have the space for a separated bedroom intended just for guests, a sleeping couch is the next best option. However, should you have an extra bedroom, let’s see some guest bedroom ideas to make that space the most comfortable, welcoming and stylish room your visitors have ever had the privilege of sleeping in!

1. Guest bedroom ideas: Where to start

Picking out bedding is the easiest way to jumpstart your guest bedroom’s style. Even if you’re not really sure what ‘look’ you want to go for, scoping out different linens, blankets and pillows are sure to provide decent inspiration, leading you to quite a few colour schemes to consider.

Take note that, should your choice of bedding be a solid colour, be sure to introduce accent hues in the form of scatter cushions or throws to bring in some character. These could even inspire you for the walls’ colours.

2. Guest bedroom ideas: Creating a colour palette

Speaking of walls, there’s no reason why your guest bedroom needs to be content with simple white. The rules for guest / spare bedrooms are slightly different than what they are for your own bedroom. You are allowed to be a bit more fun and adventurous with décor and furnishings, seeing as that space will only be used occasionally instead of every night.

Look to the colour wheel to decide what type of scheme works best for those walls – remember, colours directly opposite one another (contrasting hues) work best. However, if you’d like to play it safe, a monochromatic palette is your easiest option. Black and white, dark greys with creamy whites, dark beige with soft off-whites, etc. A relaxed look can be achieved with any colour, as long as your palette includes lighter and darker shades of your main colour.

3. Guest bedroom ideas: Making it welcoming for everyone

A successfully designed spare bedroom is one that pleases any guest, yet which doesn’t feature a style too specific to make some feel awkward.

A playful colour scheme (such as ice blue and warm orange, with bits of soft whites/creams scattered here and there) can be both relaxing and fun. For detail, a stencilled accent wall or focal wall with patterned wallpaper can be perfect.

Just remember that research is important. Spend time browsing through homify’s range of bedroom ideas to see what’s trendy and what looks work for you.

4. Guest bedroom ideas: Introduce a chic touch

Your guest bedroom might not be a five-star hotel, but there’s no reason why you can’t include an elegant touch or two for your visitor. The great news is that the smaller a room, the further your budget will go – meaning you can splurge a bit more on a hotel-style decorating scheme!

Some recommendations include: stylish wallpaper; a tufted headboard; an elegant ottoman at the foot of the bed with built-in storage space; luxurious scatter cushions that add character and style to the bed (a well-dressed bed goes a long way); a tub chair in the corner; a cashmere throw draped over the bed; luxurious drapes in front of the window; a striking glass table lamp…

5. Guest bedroom ideas: Bring in an element of fun

Your spare bedroom’s colour palette might be vital, but it’s the accessories and personal touches that will stand out for your guests.

Why not express your own personal style in the room to share a bit of yourself with your guests? If you’re a lover of travelling, for instance, maybe include a framed vintage world map as artwork. A keen reader? Set up a stylish bookcase in that bedroom which flaunts a range of interesting books and magazines.

6. Guest bedroom ideas: What else to include

Like any other room in the house, your guest bedroom will require a delicate balance of style and practicality. And some choice additions that will make your guest’s stay feel just a bit more welcoming and practical include:

• A closet or dresser space, especially if they’re staying more than one night (who wants to live out of a suitcase?)

• Lots of pillows and bedcovers to set up a soft, layered and comfy ambience (those extra blankets, quilts and throws will come in handy if there’s a chill in the air)

• A bedside table and reading light

• A wastebasket (we all have some things we need to throw away, and having an obvious place for guests to do that will help to smooth things over)

• Convenient power outlets for phones, tablets, electric shavers, etc. Extra points for you if you provide extension cords!

• Towels and basic toiletries. Most people bring their own, but almost everyone forgets something from time to time. Here is where extra shampoo, a spare towel, toothpaste, hair dryer, etc. will make a huge difference.

• Water bottle or drinking glasses

• A full-length mirror (an obvious choice for anyone who needs to dress up for a special occasion, which is likely the reason why your guests are sleeping over in the first place).
