This unique home, titled Casa No Geres, was designed by the architecture firm Correia Ragazzi. It intended to reconstruct as well as augment a ruin, creating a weekend retreat for the clients.

Located on a protected natural site, it was imperative that no trees were removed. The river became a key anchor in the design. It was to be assimilated as a visual and atmospheric quality of the interior; similarly, the home was to also become a relevant and significant form in the landscape.

In the landscape

Located at a right angle to the slope of the site, the linear form juts out toward the river. Cast in concrete, it somehow appears weightless, barely touching the land. Sitting lightly within the landscape, it manages to feel completely a part of it.

A chrysalis

The protrusion that stretches over the edge of the slope takes on a different quality to the rest of the structure. The extensive glazing and openness is eschewed in favour of a more hermetic enclave. Here, suspended above the river, one feels completely enclosed and removed from the world outside. The view towards the river is the only portal to what is beyond the concrete enclosure.

The journey

The steps leading up to the home are rough and somewhat haphazard, creating an interesting journey of removal from the outdoors and into the capsule above the river. We begin to see the strong relationship between the house and the river – when one is located in the cantilevered section of the capsule, floating out over the edge, they cannot see ground, only river.

An unexpected kitchen

Once inside, the only concrete surface that is left exposed is that of the polished flooring. Elsewhere, composite timber panels line the walls and ceilings. The kitchen is unexpected and slightly unusual in a domestic environment, but just wonderful!

The stainless steel bench, sitting lighting a top a tubular steel frame, seems like something you might find in a science lab. The other kitchen elements are all concealed within the full height cupboards that extend the length of the back wall.

Dining in the trees

It is this kitchen and dining space that is located within the cantilever. The isolated nature of the single glazed opening punctuates the space with light and greenery. One sits atop the trees, hovering above the azure water below. For more kitchen and dining space inspiration, take a look here and here!

Bathroom beauty

The bathroom is simple, but faultless. Again, timber panels line the entirety of the space except for the polished concrete floor. A sculpted free-standing bathtub is accompanied by a a free standing bath mixer; it is about as elegant as a bathroom can get! The vanity emulates the bath and tap arrangement in a smaller daintier way. There is a finesse demonstrated in the attention to detail; from the mirror to the spotlight that is pulled into place from top and bottom, everything is thoughtful and considered. Who could resist taking a bath with that view!
