Walls create division in space to create new rooms, and separate the areas with different purpose. At the same time walls do make the spaces look smaller, and reduce the multi functionality of the area. Once you decide to separate the areas,  you can also remove the separating walls of a room to increase its dimensions. There are many other decorative elements that can fulfill the purpose of a wall without the need to enter into cumbersome and expensive construction. You can create visual, spatial or decorative style separation by means of screens, shelves, plants or curtains with the same effect as if you were using a wall. Do you want to see some examples?

1. With ceiling beams

It might seem incredible but the ceiling beams can also help separate environments and yet retain the sense of space in a room. You can highlight the beams either by painting or varnishes to act as a highlight, and serve as a border to each space that is left on the sides. See here for 6 ways to separate the kitchen from the living room.

2. Furniture for separating rooms

A second idea is to take advantage of furniture to establish the boundaries. It can be a dresser, a bookshelf, a bookstore, etc. Using furniture to create a virtual division generates and maintains a certain visual depth. Another advantage of this idea is that the furniture you choose can be functional for both rooms leading to greater connection between the rooms.

3. Division with colors

Using color is another idea for dividing spaces without lifting walls. The key is knowing how to choose which tones will help us to create this dividing effect in an effective and non-strident way. An example of this beautiful and modern design where the tiny hall is painted in light tones, while the stairs that connect to the first floor are a striking red. Here is another combination that works great with white.

4. Ornaments are a great idea for separating rooms

It is the turn of the adornments to delimit spaces. The advantage here is that in addition to marking with ease and simplicity where one area ends and another begins, it also adds to the beauty of your home. A pair of pots, a mirror and even the pictures on the wall, helps to separate one area from another without using a wall.

5. Partial wall

Although we had ruled out the existence of walls from the beginning, here we have a partial wall to create the separation between two rooms. Its effectiveness is amazing and its beautiful appearance takes a huge role in creating a striking visual effect yet maintaining the connection between the rooms from both sides. See here for 7 ideas to replace the conventional walls.

6. Screens for dividing rooms without walls

The screen is a very delicate article in appearance, created just to make a small space even more intimate, so why not opt for its effectiveness and use it in places where we want to add a little more attraction. You can choose an original design for a screen, to make the division look unique.

7. Divide rooms with glass

The glass is a great ally when it comes to sectioning areas efficiently as it allows the passage of light all through. It does not represent a total separation, since it visually keeps the connection maintained.

8. The door gap but without door

If for some reason you can not completely eliminate the existing walls between one room and another, choose to create a hole as if you were to place a door, which you can eliminate. In this way you will have a free passage both functional and visual and still maintain a subtle separation between the areas.

9. With a lattice

In areas that are bordering on the outside and where you need a certain privacy, you can choose a lattice that allows the entry of light and air and visually isolate the interior. These lattices are available in attractive designs and in a variety of materials suitable for your taste and budget. See this beautiful lattice design in white for an example.

10. Division that opens, division that closes

Finally, we have a versatile, comfortable and multi functional alternative that allows you to play with the divisions depending on the requirement. When you want to have the spaces separated at certain times and unified at others. That is what this set of sliding wooden panels provides, with a system of rails which can be collapsed and expanded to create a separation as and when you desire. Divide if you want, join if you want but before you start, here are 5 things to remember before demolishing an interior wall.
