This decrepit home, with shop below, abounds with potential. If only someone would realise it! That's where Ruben Ferreira architects come in: they have conceived a stylish design for the site that retains the hybrid functions. The simple concrete base houses the shop at ground level and a contemporary timber addition above houses two levels of residential living. The minimal design is strikingly fresh and, at the same time, decisively homely. Let's take a closer look, inside and out, so we can appreciate the intricacies of this contemporary design…
It was a sad sight. The drab and dreary facade is in desperate need of a facelift, and we can only assume the same goes for the interior. As it stands, it lacks any appeal. The small windows on the upper level must permit very little natural light into the home's interior – something that is crucial for any healthy and inviting living space.
Now, that's a home you want to enter! The modern exterior is elegant and sophisticated, giving promise of an innovative and comfortable interior environment. The change in material for the lower, shop level and the upper, house level differentiates the two functions giving each a strong personal identity. And, concrete and timber – it's a combination that you'd be hard-pressed not to love!
At the very top level, a stairway leads up to the balcony. From here, one has ample outdoor space to enjoy the fresh air with the perfect vantage point to take in the surrounding neighbourhood. Careful attention is paid to the detailing, ensuring that every junction and every change in material is beautifully articulated.
The interior lives up to everything promised on the exterior – donning an equally fresh and contemporary look. The stylish open plan living area is bright and spacious, freely flowing between the various functions: kitchen, living, dining. Furniture selections are thoughtful, achieving a coherent, modern, and subtle aesthetic. Neutral tones abound, and no ostentatious excesses are needed: the simple, rational, and sophisticated design speaks for itself.
The skillion ceiling traces the roofline, borrowing as much height as possible. This lofty space feels open and expansive – it's a great way to increase the feeling of space without requiring any extra square meterage. In addition to a wonderfully flowing interior, the connection between the interior and exterior balcony is also seamless.
From inside out, this design is charming. If you enjoyed your tour today, you may also like to take a look here - A suburban home with the perfect patio.
