In today's society, modernity reigns supreme. From our architecture to our choice of clothes and accessories, and even our homes, the modern style is everywhere you look. But no matter how popular modern décor is, the world will always have an affinity for the old-fashioned.

Vintage is a term we hear all too often, but what is the vintage style anyway? Vintage decorating has a loose set of rules, but the décor primarily embraces the traditional elements of the 1940s to the 1950s. It's the style that gives you a relaxed, time-honoured feel to your home. And what better place would you want that perfect ambience than in your bedroom?

From wonderful dressers to antique armories, here are some tips on how to create the perfect vintage look for your bedroom.

Wonderful window Dressings

Choosing the perfect curtains for your vintage-style bedroom is easier than you think. Neutral, light coloured curtains provide a blank canvas which you can decorate around, but you can also opt for bolder patterns, as we see here. The use of plain, white walls allows the flower-printed curtains to pop out and grab your attention. You can get even more creative and match your curtains with pillow dressings, plates, accessories and even the flowers that are sitting atop the window sill. Achieving this vintage look is not only easy to accomplish, but looks fantastic!

Have you thought about wall colours?

The wall colour in any room is the major element that bring the whole thing together. In the correct hues, paint can transform a room of second-hand items into a beautifully designed space. There are many different options to choose from when considering the vintage wall. In this image, we see the classic use of paisley, bringing in that old-timey feel. The soft blue on a light background accentuates style without being too overwhelming and taking away from the rest of the accessories.

If you want to opt for something a little less busy, solid pastel colours are the perfect alternative. Soft yellows, pinks, and blues are some of the more popular vintage-style pastels. Even a solid white will add vintage flair to your room.

It's all about the bed

Where would your vintage bedroom be without a vintage bed? Something that will immediately give your bedroom that timeless feel is antique cushions. Comfortable, homemade, stitched pillows on every soft surface will make any home feel a lot more cosy. Look around for bedding and decorative items that have a vintage feel. If you are able to source some vintage linens, you could even create your own bedding or cushions.

For ideas on where to find vintage bedding, be sure to look on your community notice boards or ask around at flea markets and second hand furniture stores. Of course, before you commit to buying anything vintage, make sure that the product is in good quality so that you are not paying something that is worth nothing at all.

Add antique furniture

In addition to being stylish, vintage furniture is one of the smartest choices when it comes to buying good quality furniture for less. It is also great for when you want to furnish your home in a style that is completely your own. Delicately painted wooden furniture will add instant personality and breathtaking beauty to your vintage bedroom.

Another thing you might want to consider when aiming for the vintage look is re-purposing your furniture. Use a small table as a nightstand, or repaint an old, unused television armoire and transform it into a unique, vintage-looking bookshelf. Unusual furniture in unanticipated places will give your place its own individual style.

Include vintage flooring and carpet

Flooring is always a difficult choice when deciding upon style in your home. Thankfully, to achieve that vintage look, there are many different flooring design options to choose from. One of the go-to styles is naturally solid hardwood flooring. Hardwoods heighten any style, they're very easy to match with, and most importantly, they don't take away from the other features of the room. As we see in this chic yet simple vintage style room, hardwood floors perfectly accentuate the soft pastels and provide a nice, wide open space.

If you want to venture for something a little more challenging, however, consider pastel or white carpeting. And if you can't decide on which style you prefer, fuse them – match stunning hardwood floors with small area rugs.

Spruce it up with homewares and accessories

When it comes to vintage décor, last, but certainly not least, are homewares and accessories. Taking a trip to your local antique store will give you great inspiration for finding the perfect homewares and accessories to accent your new vintage-style bedroom. An old-fashioned clock or lampshade can be great pieces to add to a bedside table to recreate that vintage look. But if antique stores aren't able to give you what you're looking for, try refurbishing your old furniture like Vintage Uniques does in their makeovers. Something to keep in mind when you're piecing all of these items with each other is to keep it simple. Don't overcrowd your bedroom with too many items, or you risk taking away from the overall vintage feel.
