Sometimes it can be hard to choose a style when decorating your home. Should you go ultra-modern, with sleek surfaces and all the newest gadgets, or take a more rustic vintage route for a homely decor that is welcoming and intimate? Well this gorgeous home is here to prove that you can have the best of both worlds, and the results are fantastic.
The decorators of this home clearly have a love for all things vintage, with restored antique furniture featuring prominently in all of the living areas. But they also recognise that some modern advances are too good to ignore, and so have opted for a more contemporary style in the rooms that most benefit from it; the kitchen and the bathroom. This is a great compromise, because frankly kitchens have only ever improved over the years, while for living spaces and bedrooms certain things are perfect just the way they are, such as beautiful vintage furniture, and a more humble comforting aesthetic.
Now let's take a look at how they did it!
The first impression you get is of the simplicity of the decor. Using a restrained white colour palette for the bedrooms, paired with stunning hardwood floors, they have allowed the furniture to take centre stage.
The twin beds feature monochromatic cushions which liven up the room with exotic prints, and we can also see the fabulous fainting couch which adds a touch of sophistication. We also see the first piece of restored furniture, and we think you'll agree it looks amazing.
From the other angle we see that the vintage bedside table has a partner in this very pretty set of drawers. The restored antiques really set the tone in this house, giving it a shabby chic feel that looks stylish but homely.
Matching furniture is a great way to tie the aesthetic of a room together, and restoring old pieces is a smart way to keep costs down. The large artwork finishes the room off in classic style.
The guest bedroom also features twin beds, this time with matching artworks, and is simple and sparse. The white colour palette means that you can really go in any direction with the decorations, and the deep blues and vibrant reds of the art really pop here.
Restored vintage furniture features throughout the entire home, providing a unified aesthetic that is only broken later when we enter the kitchen.
This is a great way to show people that your decor is thorough and thought out, and pieces like this bedside table in the guest room are a great way to make anyone visiting feel perfectly at home.
As we move into the more utility focused areas of the house the vintage aesthetic slowly incoporates more modern elements like this bathroom sink.
We really love the full wall mirror which is bordered by copper panels that reflect the light, while adding a rich depth to the decor.
By the time we reach the toilet the modern aesthetic has taken over, and we think that was a wise decision. Vintage furniture can look great in a bathroom, but the extreme amount of moisture tends to quickly damage the furniture, leading to swelling wood and peeling paint. This is a nightmare for cleaning, and maintenance in general, so to ensure a hygienic and comfortable bathroom it's a far better idea to opt for sleek surfaces like we see here, and to inject a bit of the quaint style of the rest of the house stick to artwork and fun accessories like the small vase of flowers.
The kitchen is one space where we recommend ditching the vintage aesthetic altogether, and taking advantage of modern advances. Kitchens have become far more functional, easier to maintain, and now feature the kind of technological wizardry that makes our lives so much easier, and this can only be a good thing. Plenty of cabinets, sleek surfaces, and modern appliances set this room apart, but you'll notice the bold red and black palette still looks fantastic with the hardwood floors, especially with the wooden upper cabinets bringing it all together.
What a fabulous house! Mixing styles may seem reckless, but as we can see here allowing form to follow function can still result in an incredibly impressive looking home! For more inspiration check out this dazzling renovation story!
