South Africa doesn’t need to stand back when it comes to eye-catching architectural designs. Especially not with our country’s talent, one of which is experienced firm Francois Marais Architects who has been known for its groundbreaking designs since 1996 (the year the company was established).

Located in Johannesburg, Francois Marais Architects also continues its day-to-day operations from its Cape Town branch. Architectural designs might be the main mission, yet clients of Francois Marais Architects are well aware of the firm’s reputation for specialising in designing energy efficient and green-star rated buildings for both commercial- and residential spaces. That, and first-class designs radiating elegance, spaciousness, visual splendour, and so much more.

Let’s be inspired today by one of these architectural professionals’ latest achievement: the super modern home with its creative curves…

A bit of background info

This project, which was commissioned by a client to begin construction this year, is located in Zambia. Even though words like 'majestic' come to mind when viewing the front side, this design is not just about blowing minds (visually speaking). Functionality also plays a very important part. Like the fact that this entire structure was designed around a central atrium which helps with natural ventilation and distributing light throughout the ground- and first floors.

Function and form

In addition, the atrium also serves as a brilliant blend between the interior- and exterior spaces of this grand house.

And thanks to the generous amount of glazing, it's not hard to spot said atrium from the driveway!

Notice the subtle-yet-effective landscaping touches delicately peppered here and there to include some fresh foliage – quite the contrast between this giant man-made structure and Mother Nature herself.

A view of the back

Usually, modern houses present a rather closed-off look at the front, then become much friendlier (and open) at the back side. Needless to say, this design is an exception, considering the way it generously welcomes us at the front by allowing us glimpses into the interiors (and that atrium we've been talking about).

Notice the different textures (wood, glass, concrete) contrasting and complementing one another to create some extra depth and character for the house – both inside and outside. In addition to looking super stylish, the timber cladding also helps to screen bathroom- and scullery windows throughout the day for some much-needed privacy.

See what we mean by function and form?

What’s inside?

Besides lots of space? According to the specifications, the Francois Marais Architects pros treated this modern marvel to no fewer than five en-suite bathrooms, a lounge, family room, dining room , kitchen scullery, player room, plus a bunch of other equally impressive spaces.

Yet, it's this backyard view that completely dazzles us with its potential for… anything! A backyard braai with friends? A fancy al fresco dinner party for colleagues? How about a simple relaxing weekend with just family? Done, done, and done!
