Whether the architecture of a building is climate responsive? This is a question which may arise when we are planning to begin the construction of a building. Is it really climate responsive? If the answer is yes, then what kind of buildings will be suitable for the climate of Kerala? Usually, the climate and structure of buildings are correlative, so when we are planning for the construction of a building first we should consider the seasonal changes in that area. Every place will have different types of climate. Basically, there are three major seasons in Kerala. They are Summer (February – May), Monsoon (June – August and October – November) and Winter (December – January) with an interval of mild weather between August and October. So the buildings should be equally responsive with these three seasons.

During the raining season, it is important to protect the walls from the rainwater for improving the rigidity of the walls. For this purpose, The roofs of the buildings have a slight slope for protecting the walls from the direct rain and also the presence of verandah all around the building will also help to protect the wall from the sun and rain. Structurally the roof frame is supported on the pillars on the walls erected on a plinth raised from the ground for the protection against the dampness and insects in the tropical climate Window awnings can minimize the temperature from 65-80% during summer. When we are talking about the kitchen the proper lighting and the flow of air should be considered. Doors and windows should be capable enough for the easy flow of air. it is much important because this will help us to reduce the damages in case of fire. apart from all these preservation techniques in the architectural designs, the skillful choice of timber, artful assembly and delicate carving of the woodwork for columns, walls and roofs frames are unique characteristics of  Kerala architecture.

Vernacular architecture is a term used to categorize methods of construction which use locally available methods and materials.it tends to evolve  overtime to reflect the environment and historical context in which it exists. Indian vernacular architecture is the functional architecture of structures, often in rural areas of India, built of local materials and designed to meet the needs of the local peopleThe vernacular architecture of Kerala is known for years for its climate-responsive design for a comfortable indoor environment. It is found to be highly effective in providing thermally comfortable indoors – cool condition during summer and warmth in winter. The experimental investigations conducted so far reveals that the reason for thermal discomfort in the summer season in Kerala is not only due to the increase in temperature but also due to the increase in the moisture content in the air during the period. In Kerala vernacular architecture, this is achieved with a highly insulative building envelope, the presence of the internal courtyard provided within the living spaces and an optimum number of window openings on the external walls with suitable sizes. The vernacular architecture gives solutions that are in perfect harmony with nature.
